Problem Statement

Children with disabilities often lack opportunities to practise essential daily living skills outside of intervention settings primarily due to: 

(i) insufficient trained educators or professionals

(ii) interventions rarely extending into the child's immediate and natural environment 

(iii) limited parental involvement

(iv) inadequate research on the topic.

Solution

The programme creates an enabling and nurturing environment for children to reinforce their learning and development beyond school, through experiencing autonomy, relatedness and achieving competence in various hands-on activities in the natural outdoors around them.

Outcomes

The programme aims to establish an inclusive forest and nature school pilot for children on the autism spectrum. This initiative extends intervention activities and skill practice beyond clinical settings, providing a natural environment for interaction with children of diverse abilities.

In collaboration with Thye Hua Kwan Early Intervention for Children (THKEIC) Services, a resource kit will be developed to empower the community in supporting the outdoor learning and development of children with special needs.
